And… it’s broken

Yesterdayhttps://www.sophieinthesun.com/post/possibly-a-broken-arm I was worried that O’s arm continued to hurt after a fall last week I took O to the minor injury and illness clinic we have not too far away (it’s like a mini hospital but for non serious medical things). There was a lot of waiting (to be seen by the nurse, for the xray, then to see the doctor), but O was so well behaved the whole time.
When he had his xray, I could see straight away there was a break of some kind. I only managed a photo of this angle, which doesn’t show it as clearly, but the lateral view clearly showed a break. I’ve circled the fracture.
Poor little guy had been going about his day with a broken arm for DAYS without complaint and no one, not his parents, teacher, or grandparents realising! Too stoic for his own good.
Anyway we saw the doctor and he let me know it was a closed fracture of the ulna, luckily it was in a good position, so no surgery needed, just a cast for 4 weeks. He and a lovely nurse put the cast on. After 3 hours we were all done, and I was reminded of the joys of free healthcare because the whole experience was completely free.
This is the first broken bone from either kid, so it’s uncharted territory. But glad we now know what it is and have a treatment plan. I’ve got him booked into a fracture clinic on Friday that’s private and for kids, which apparently can offer a waterproof cast, as the plaster cast can’t get wet which is a real pain especially for a 5 year old. So that will cost us money but I think it will be worth it.
O will have the rest of the week off school so luckily we have grandparents who can help today with looking after him while Al and I work. Grateful for that.
So that’s our news! Anyone else dealt with kids with broken bones?
Oh man! Poor kiddo. I broke my ankle many years ago and walked around on it for WEEKS without realizing it was broken. It's wild what our bodies can do, lol. I hope he has a speedy recovery and it's not too much of a hassle dealing with the cast.
Oh no, that is a shame. He has been quite a trooper, although probably it would have been better for you if he had have made more of a fuss.
When my kids were young, I casually told my MIL, "Oh, all kids break their arms." She looked at me, frowned, and said none of my kids did. This was actually before any of my kids had broken any bones; I just assumed that was the case because my 3 siblings and I all broke our arms, and my brother and my youngest sister both broke theirs twice. Oh no :( Poor O. He seems very brave about the whole thing. I'm glad he's getting the care he needs. My son has had two fractures and the cast is SUCH A nuisance to keep dry. I 100% think it's worth the investment to get a waterproof cast if you're able to (we didn't have the option and getting him bathed and trying to keep it dry in other situations was a hassle). Hope he makes a speedy recovery and hugs to you all.
Oh no! I was hoping it wasn’t broken. Poor little buddy! I think it’s definitely worth getting a waterproof cast. It would be such a hassle to keep that cast dry!
