Reset Sunday

Writer: SophieSophie

Due to my current work overload, I originally planned to work Sunday. I planned to take Saturday off work, take the kids out Sunday morning for an outing, and then work Sunday afternoon. I had a nice, lazy Saturday which was what I needed. But when I woke up on Sunday morning I felt a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I did not want to work. Now, I love work. I am lucky in that I honestly look forward to my work days most days. So when I absolutely do not want to work, I listen to that instinct.

So I played devils advocate - what would happen if I didn’t work? I realised I could send a couple of emails, explain I had been unwell (which is true!), and deliver the work on Tuesday or Wednesday with NO negative consequences. A lot of my deadlines are self-imposed, or verbal agreements, but a few days delay is actually not a big deal. So, I decided- no work today. It is my weekend after all (and I have worked the last few). Instead, I did a “Sunday Reset” and it was so good.

Things I did today:

  • Play with the kids (puzzles, reading, bubbles in the backyard, adventures in our huge “front yard”).

  • Clean the kitchen (including clearing all our surfaces- I’m enjoying less clutter)

  • Declutter and tidy my office (it had gotten so messy including piles of papers on the floor!)

  • Dye my hair (I always do this out of a box, and it was overdue)

  • Two loads of laundry

  • Folded two loads of laundry (not the same two loads- I wish I was that on top of things)

  • Listened to podcasts (I was in a true crime mood)

  • Make popcorn (so easy - I should do it more often)

Tidy office. Aaahh.

Popcorn! Yum

I feel about a million times better and ready to jump into my work tomorrow with renewed relish and productivity. I’m so glad I followed my gut on this one.

Happy Sunday everyone.

A sick feeling in the pit of your stomach was a clear sign! I'm glad you were able to take the day off instead of work. Although... you actually did do a lot of work! All that cleaning and laundry! If I were taking a day to reset I would probably want to sit in Starbucks and read a book- but then I wouldn't feel as good at the end of the day as you did. I can see why you felt a million times better after this reset.

That was what I did Saturday! Well, I drank coffee from my bed and read for a big chunk of the day. But yes, I guess it wasn’t aa break from any work I needed, it was a break from computer based work!

I’m glad you were able to take a break and give yourself a weekend day to refill your cup! It’s tough to have to work on the weekends! Your Sunday sounds wonderful! Ours is just starting here and we have a fun day planned with an afternoon gathering at a friend’s house on a lake!
